Each summer, Swim Alberta organizes the A.S.S.A. All-Star team consisting of summer swimmers who are eligible to compete in the Swim Alberta Age Group & Senior Championships Long Course.
The meet which usually occurs in the late June/early July time frame is an opportunity for A.S.S.A.'s top summer swimmers to compete against Alberta's best year-round swimmers.

2009 ASSA All-Star Competition Summary
On behalf of Swim Alberta I would like to thank all of the swimmers and coaches for their participation at the 2009 Alberta Age Group/Senior Swimming Championships, and congratulate you all for your contribution to a hugely successful ASSA All-Star Team.

Highlights of the meet:

Nathan Saby of the Camrose Sea Serpents qualified for Age Group Nationals in the 100 Free. He will be competing in Montreal July 16-19, 2009. He also received his Alberta top 25 youth recognition time in the 50 free. Nathan won the 13&14 50 free and while doing so broke former summer swimmer, Kyle Troskot’s All Star record. Kyle now swims for Lethbridge and will be representing Alberta at the 2009 Canada Games in Prince Edward Island. This shows the kind of future Nathan may have in summer swimming.

The teams first ever para-swimmer, Alexander McCulloch, won one gold in 200 back and silver in both 200 free and 50 free. Alexander qualified for Speedo Can/Am Para-swimming championships which takes place in Edmonton July 30 to August 1, 2009.

13&14 100 Free - Nathan Saby – 58.89 in finals, broke Blake Andre’s 2004 record of 59.92
13&14 50 Free - Nathan Saby – 26.61 in finals, broke Kyle Troskot’s 2006 record of 26.74
11&12 400 Free - Andres Klien – 5:33.83 in prelims, broke Mason Kuhn’s 2008 record of 5:36.00
10&U 100 breast - Sean deVisser – 1:56.05 in prelims, there was no previous record.
10&U 50 Fly - Dante Chan – 37.56 in prelims and 37.35 in finals, broke Anders Klein’s 2008 record of 37.91
10&U 50 Free - Dante Chan – 33.91 in prelims, broke George Degraaf’s 2001 time of 33.92
Additionally, Nathan Saby, who swims for the Camrose Sea Serpents under coach Shane Gau, posted some great swims at the 2009 Age Group Nationals in Montreal. Representing the ASSA All-Star Team, Nathan swam four events: 50 Free, 100 Free, 50 Breast and 50 Fly. He collected three best times and smashed three All-Star team records:
13&14 100 Free - Nathan Saby – 58.38, broke his own record of 58.89
13&14 50 Free - Nathan Saby – 26.47, broke his own record of 26.61
13&14 50 Breast - Nathan Saby – 34.33, broke Mike Vanden Ham's 1998 record of 34.82
Nathan also qualified for a finals swim in the 50 Free, where he posted his top placing of the meet coming in 10th.

2008 ASSA All-Star Team
On behalf of Swim Alberta I would like to thank all of the swimmers and coaches for their participation at the 2008 Alberta Age Group/Senior Swimming Championships, and congratulate you all on a hugely successful ASSA All-Stars team. 41 teams from across the country, the Czech Republic and Bermuda attended for a total of 611 swimmers. This season the A.S.S.A All-Stars had 23 swimmers qualify for the meet. The age group team’s placed tenth and the senior team placed 14th overall. The All-Stars also hauled in eight medals and shattered 20 All-Star records.

We had the pleasure of having Bill Humby, head coach of the University of Alberta Varsity Team, as our mentor coach during the Saturday and Sunday finals. The entire coaching staff had a great time and would like to thank the swimmers for being so willing to learn, and easy to coach.
